Make a Photo Look Like a Gallery Print With Photoshop

Professional Finish

You can give your photograph a professional finish by making it look like a gallery print. Gallery prints generally have wide borders, normally in white, grey or black depending on the colour of the image.

The photo is placed in the top portion of the frame area allowing the name, title and gallery to fit under the image in type.

Here’s how you can do this technique using Photoshop CS5.

1

Open the photo that you want to use for the gallery print effect

Step 1

2

Press Ctrl+ J to duplicate the background layer, then press D to reset the default colours.

Step 2

3

Press Ctrl+Backspace to fill the background layer with white.

Step 3

4

Click image then click canvas size from the drop down menu. The Canvas size dialog box appears.

Step 4

5

Click Relative so that the box has a check mark, then type 5 inches (or 12 cm) in the width and height data fields to add 5 inches to the canvas in each direction. At the bottom of the Canvas dialog box select white then click OK.

Step 5

6

Repeat steps 4 and 5 to open the Canvas size dialog box again. Click the top centre arrow of the Anchor grid (below) then type 4 in the height only data field to add 4 inches to the bottom of the white border. Click OK.

Step 6

7

Ctrl+Click the photo thumbnail in the layers panel to select the photo.

Step 7

8

Click the New layer button to add a new empty layer.

Step 8

9

Click edit then click stroke from the drop-down menu.

Step 9

10

The stroke dialog box appears. Type 6 in the width data field at the top of the box. Just below, click inside where it says location, click OK.

Step 10

11

Click select and from the drop-down menu select Transform Selection.

Step 11

12

Type 103 in the width data field and 104 in the Height data field. Click the commit (check) button.

Step 12

13

Click the New Layer button. Repeat steps 9 and 10 and increase the stroke width to 10.

Step 13

14

Press Ctrl+D to deselect the border.

Step 14

15

Select the type tool by pressing T. Click Window and from the drop-down menu select Character, this opens the character panel.

Step 15

16

Select a size and a handwriting-styled font.

Step 16

17

Click one side of the image, type a title and press enter or click the commit button. Below I’ve just put my name.

Step 17

18

Select another suitable font to add another title; I’ve simply put White Rose. If you want to change the spacing between the letters just type a number in the field ( the 3rd box down on the right of the character panel).

Step 18

The Image now appears like a traditional gallery print.
