So after much anticipation, Apple finally revealed their new iPhone yesterday and was pretty much as everyone expected from the leaked photos. We got a taller screen measuring 4 inches it will display a resolution of 1136 x 640. Its around 20% lighter and 20% thinner than the current 4S at 7.6mm in thickness and 112 grams in weight. With the extra screen real estate they are able to add in a 5th row of icons.
It also features hardware changes – its now made entirely out of aluminium and glass – the glass back has gone which should make it more durable. The A5 processor has been upgraded to an A6 which should make things runs almost twice as fast – gaming will be improved along other functions being sped up. The new phone also now has LTE connectivity on carriers that support it.
As I mentioned previously, it does have a new connector called “lightning” for charging and attaching to accessories but there will be an adaptor so the new phone will work with old accessories.
The iPhone 5 has a brand new 8 Megapixel iSight camera with an f/2.4 aperture and a hybrid IR filter which will perform better in low light situations and has 40% faster image capture. There is also a new panoramic stitch mode which allows you shoot wide vistas of up to 28 megapixels in size.
The general feeling is that people are a bit underwhelmed – we’re used to Apple wowing us with new products like when the iPhone was first released, or the iPad was released. This new iPhone is nothing revolutionary – just tweaks. I think the iPhone has got to the point where its going to be hard to improve it much further as it is – I still think its the best phone on the market and with the new camera and panoramic mode will make a good companion to your regular SLR camera.
