Convert your Colour Photographs to Black & White with Photoshop Elements

Here’s a good way of converting colour photos to black and white with photoshop elements.Your not going to convert using grayscale; your finished image will still be in the RGB  mode but will look black and white giving a much better looking conversion. I,ve used elements 9 but earlier version should also work.

To start, open the photo that you want to convert to black and white in the elements editor. Press D to set your foreground and background to the default black and white.

step 1

step 1

step 2

Next, choose levels from the create new adjustment layer pop-up menu (it’s the half-black/half white circle icon)

step 2

step 3

This will add a new layer to your layers palette and the levels controls will appear in the adjustments palette.

step 3

step 4

With your foreground set to black, choose gradient map from the create new adjustment layer pop-up menu.

step 4

step 5

This brings up the gradient map options in the adjustments palette. Now, already the black and white conversion looks pretty good. If your image doesn’t look black and white, it’s because you didn’t set your foreground and background colours at their defaults.

step 5

step 6

In the layers palette, click on the levels thumbnail in the levels 1 layer; this will bring up the levels controls in the adjustments palette again.

step 6

step 7

In the pop-up menu at the top of the layers palette, you can choose to edit individual colour channels.viagra To begin, choose the red colour channel.

What you do next will depend on the photo you’re converting. If you want to open the shadow areas then drag the middle midtone input slider to the left until the shadow areas look about right.

Now repeat with the green channel and then the blue. The left slider on each channel will alter the shadows, the middle slider the midtones and the right slider will alter the highlights. When the photo looks good to you (good contrast and good shadow and highlight details) then stop dragging the sliders.

step 7

step 8

Now, click on layers at the top of the screen, and on the flyout menu choose flatten image. This will flatten the adjustment layers into thebackground layer.

step 8

That’s it, you now have your colour to black and white conversion.
