2012 Astronomy Photographer of the Year Competition

I’ve always found astronomy fascinating, and have often thought of acquiring a super telephoto lens to capture some images of the night sky. But, here in the UK, light pollution, and also the weather, doesn’t make it an easy proposition.

The UK is not the first place that the worlds top astronomers would consider to get a good view of the heavens, but, it’s here that the Royal Observatory in Greenwich are running the ‘Astronomy Photographer of the year Competition’.

Now in its fourth year it continues to attract entries from around the world with stunning images of our nigh sky’s, planets and galaxy’s.

The winners will be announced on September 19 and will be featured in an exhibition at the famous Royal Observatory near London from October 20.

Here’s some of the shortlisted entries:

All entries were submitted via a dedicated Flickr group and can be followed live on Twitter here: #astrophoto12.

The study of objects outside our galaxy is a branch of astronomy concerned with the formation and evolution of Galaxies; their morphology and classification; and the examination of active galaxies, and the groups and clusters of galaxies. The latter is important for the understanding of the large-scale structure of the cosmos..’-”
